The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore is marking the final weeks of 'Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture', an exhibition that closes Sunday, August 9. The museum’s announcement encourages visitors to see the show before it ends and notes that admission is always free.
The exhibition presents Fletcher’s jewelry and related material as part of a broader look at the artist’s practice and life. According to the museum, the display includes personal items, jewelry and historic artworks, and it traces Fletcher’s early life, sources of inspiration, travels to Africa, path into film and television, and current artistic practice. The museum describes the exhibition as an afrofuturistic exploration of Black identity.
Fletcher is best known for creating adornments worn by characters in 'Black Panther', 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' and 'Coming 2 America'. The Walters’ framing makes clear, however, that the exhibition extends beyond that screen work to focus on her development as an artist and the themes that shape her jewelry. The show uses adornment as a lens for storytelling and identity, placing Fletcher’s work in conversation with historic artworks from the museum’s collection.
The Walters identifies the presentation as an adaptation of an exhibition originally shown at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York in 2025. The museum does not provide further curatorial details in the announcement, but it emphasizes the exhibition’s mix of contemporary jewelry, personal objects and historical material as part of a single interpretive arc.
To coincide with the closing weeks, the Walters has scheduled a series of related public programs. On Saturday, July 25, 'Kojo Astronaut: An Afrofuturistic Performance by Afro House' is set for 3 to 4 p.m., with Afro House artistic director Scott Patterson drawing inspiration from Fletcher’s work. Also on July 25, 'Drop-in Art Making' runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., inviting participants to create a self-portrait inspired by the exhibition.
A curator tour titled 'The Jewelry of Douriean Fletcher' is listed for Sunday, July 26, from 2 to 3 p.m., and on Thursday, August 6, the museum has two more programs tied to the exhibition: 'Express and Explore Tour: Douriean Fletcher' from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and 'Style & Sips: Douriean Fletcher Inspired Jewelry Making' from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition’s final day, Sunday, August 9, will also include 'Fashion Remix: Baltimore Fashion Week Mixer' from 1 to 4 p.m., bringing together Fashion Remix finalists and members of Baltimore’s fashion community while visitors can view the show one last time.
