Prague City Gallery’s exhibition ‘Expanze: Přírůstky 2013–2025’ will close on 30 August at GHMP Knihovna, giving visitors only a few more days to see a selection from the institution’s major expansion of its collection over the past 13 years. The exhibition, on view in Prague’s Old Town near Old Town Square, brings together works acquired between 2013 and 2025.
During that period, the gallery acquired 2,366 artworks, compared with 375 during the previous comparable period, according to the institution. ‘Expanze’ presents a selection from those acquisitions and traces developments in visual art from the second half of the 20th century through the first quarter of the 21st century. The exhibition is curated by Magdalena Juříková, who is also identified by the gallery as the curator of the exhibition.
The presentation spans painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, spatial installation and conceptual art. It includes established artists from several generations, among them Jitka Válová, Stanislav Kolíbal, Milan Grygar, Květa Pacovská, Milena Dopitová and Jiří David, alongside younger practitioners including Tadeáš Kotrba, Vasil Artamonov, Alexej Kljukov and the group Podebal. The full list of exhibiting artists also includes Mária Bartuszová, Magdalena Jetelová, Krištof Kintera, Petr Nikl, Ivan Pinkava, Daniel Pitín, František Skála and Jiří Thýn.
The gallery describes its collecting activity as focused particularly on experimental work from the 1960s and 1970s, the generation of the 1990s, and contemporary art. Its programme of exhibitions has included the ‘Start Up’ series for emerging artists, as well as the projects ‘Myslet filmem’ in 2023–24 and ‘Enter the Room’ in 2025. Since 2013, GHMP has also collected moving image as an important part of visual culture, a policy reflected in the exhibition’s inclusion of video and other time-based work.
Prague City Gallery’s wider collection covers art of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries and is organised into five sections: painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic art and furniture. The institution says it currently manages approximately 17,000 objects, with particular emphasis on art from the second half of the 20th century and contemporary practice, including photography and new media. An online collection database provides access to parts of its holdings beyond the exhibition.
‘Expanze: Přírůstky 2013–2025’ is open at GHMP Knihovna, Mariánské náměstí 98/1, Prague 1, from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–6pm, with Thursday hours extending to 8pm. The building has step-free access. The exhibition runs through Sunday, 30 August 2026.
