Gala Porras-Kim to Present First Institutional Exhibition in Colombia at Medellín’s MAMM

Gala Porras-Kim will present ‘El movimiento de un registro fluvial’ at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (MAMM), marking the Colombian artist’s first institutional exhibition in the country. The exhibition brings together recent projects examining how museums, archives and structures of power shape the narratives attached to cultural objects, including decisions about what is preserved, how preserved material is interpreted and how museum narratives are constructed and legitimised.

Porras-Kim is described by the MAMM as a Colombian, Korean and US artist based in Los Angeles. Her presentation forms part of a new four-exhibition cycle at the Medellín museum, alongside projects by Pedro Gómez-Egaña, Astrid González and Félix Blume. The group of exhibitions explores different relationships to matter, territory, memory and sound across the museum’s Salas Fundiciones, A, B, C, D, LAB 3 and Teatro MAMM.

‘El movimiento de un registro fluvial’ is curated by Natalia Valencia Arango, with Ana Ruíz Valencia coordinating the exhibition. The institutional description places Porras-Kim’s recent work within a critical consideration of the systems that determine the afterlife of cultural objects: the processes through which items enter collections, the interpretive frameworks applied to them and the authority by which particular accounts become established as museum narratives.

The MAMM’s opening programme begins on Thursday, September 10, with free admission and the opening of the galleries at 11 a.m. A 4:30 p.m. tour will cover ‘La boca por donde el agua engendra el agua’ and ‘El movimiento de un registro fluvial’, followed by an opening conversation at 6:30 p.m. Earlier that afternoon, at 3 p.m., tours cover ‘Enjambre’ and ‘Los años de la piedra’.

Porras-Kim gives a talk on Friday, September 11, devoted to ‘El movimiento de un registro fluvial’ at 10 a.m. The museum has announced the opening and artist talk as a two-day programme with free admission. The museum’s own exhibitions listing gives the run as open-ended, "Desde 10 de septiembre 2026", without announcing a closing date.

The other exhibitions in the cycle extend the museum’s material and sensory focus. Gómez-Egaña’s ‘Los años de la piedra’ considers the overlap between domestic and geological space in relation to Antioquia’s landscape and the former industrial building occupied by the MAMM. González’s ‘La boca por donde el agua engendra el agua’ approaches the ocean as a site of burial, liberation and ancestral presence, while Blume’s ‘Enjambre’ uses 250 suspended small speakers to reproduce the individual sounds of bees in flight. The MAMM is located at Ciudad Del Río, Carrera 44 N° 19A-100, in Medellín, and opens Tuesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
