Kunsthalle Bremen has opened an expanded version of its collection exhibition ‘Remix’ that focuses on photography and the unstable line between reality and fabrication. Titled ‘Remix. Photographie – Fiktion und Wahrheit’, the presentation runs through 28 February 2027 and brings together historical and contemporary photographs in four large exhibition rooms in Bremen.
According to the museum, the exhibition revisits photography’s long-standing reputation as an objective record, a reliable document of reality, and even evidence in criminal investigations. The selected works instead question those assumptions, presenting photography as a medium in which truth and fiction can blur. The Kunsthalle also frames the display in relation to current concerns, including the online flood of digital images and the credibility of photography in the age of artificial intelligence.
The exhibition includes works by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Candida Höfer, Richard Mosse, Sebastian Riemer, Ricarda Roggan, Thomas Ruff, August Sander, Taryn Simon, Thomas Struth and Heinrich Zille. The Kunsthalle says the photographs come partly from its own collection, partly as long-term loans from the Ültzen collection, and partly as loans from the collection of Lothar Schirmer. Many of the works are being shown in Bremen for the first time.
The museum’s website gives examples of the individual works on view, including Candida Höfer’s ‘Komische Oper Berlin VII’ from 2020, Richard Mosse’s ‘If I Ran the Zoo’ from 2012, Thomas Ruff’s ‘Substrat 18 l’ from 2003, Sebastian Riemer’s ‘Rodeo (Rider)’ from 2022, and Taryn Simon’s work from the series ‘The Innocents’. The exhibition also places these photographs in dialogue with earlier positions in the medium, including the work of August Sander, Thomas Struth and Heinrich Zille.
Public tours are already scheduled for the exhibition, including dates in late July, August and September 2026. The Kunsthalle lists guided visits on 25 July, 2, 8, 9, 14, 16, 22, 23, 28 and 29 August, and again on 11, 19 and 27 September. The exhibition itself opened on 22 July 2026.
‘Remix. Photographie – Fiktion und Wahrheit’ is presented as an extension of Kunsthalle Bremen’s collection display rather than as a standalone loan show. The institution says the four-room installation is designed to probe photography’s authority at a moment when images circulate faster and more widely than ever, while still relying on the medium’s basic tension between document and interpretation.
