Print Center New York will present ‘Mira Dayal: Nets,’ a solo presentation of recent work by the Brooklyn-based artist, from September 17 through November 21, 2026. The exhibition will be installed in the institution’s Leslie and Johanna Garfield Lobby at 535 West 24th Street in New York.
Dayal’s project begins with plasma-cut steel sculptures that she adapts as printmaking plates. Rather than relying on conventional inked impressions, she uses the pressure of the press, along with materials including steel, chalk, graphite, and paper, to investigate the physical and dimensional possibilities of printmaking. Some works record the sculptures’ impressions in black chalk, while others retain the embossments produced by the press alone.
The resulting forms evoke textile patterns, mathematical nets, spiderwebs, map grids, and expanded steel sheets. The presentation’s title refers to the steel “net” sculptures at the center of the new work, which connect Dayal’s interest in material forces with broader systems associated with cartography, mathematics, and language. The works engage tension, gravity, friction, wind, and heat as both physical conditions and organizing principles.
The pieces were made during residencies and workshops at Ox-Bow, Lower East Side Printshop, and Dieu Donné. The process extends Dayal’s wider practice of building what she describes as “sculptural systems” from industrial and everyday materials. Her work spans sculpture, drawing, installation, books, and interdisciplinary projects that examine systems of meaning, changing technologies, and the limits of language and image.
Dayal is an artist, writer, and editor based in Brooklyn. Her current body of work includes “language objects,” sculptures in steel and other materials that replicate and abstract tools and materials associated with the production of language and narrative. She is also Senior Editor at Triple Canopy, coedited ‘Track changes: a handbook for art criticism,’ published by Paper Monument in 2023, and publishes the collaborative artist-book series ‘prompt :’ with Nicole Kaack. Her artist books and related publications are held by collections including the Beinecke Library at Yale University, Barnard College, the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art Library, the New York Public Library, the School of Visual Arts, and the University of Pennsylvania.
A work illustrated for the presentation, ‘Untitled’ (2026), is made with chalk on handmade paper and measures 14 by 11¼ inches. ‘Nets’ will open alongside Print Center New York’s fall exhibition ‘Parasol Press: Breaking New Ground’ and Caroline Ongpin’s pop-up presentation ‘Passage.’ The opening reception for all three presentations is scheduled for September 17 from 6 to 8 p.m.; Dayal’s solo presentation remains on view through November 21, 2026.
