Mie Prefectural Art Museum will present ‘Y² project: Katsunori Mizuno — Engraved Time, Unstable Forms’ from 1 September through 27 December 2026 at the Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Memorial Museum in Tsu, Japan. The exhibition will be the third edition of the museum’s Y² project, an initiative established to introduce artists regarded by the institution as carrying Japanese art into the next generation.
The exhibition will focus on Katsunori Mizuno, a video artist from Mie Prefecture. According to the museum, Mizuno carefully observes incidental phenomena in nature and everyday scenery, using video to bring easily overlooked views and occurrences into focus. His work addresses the passage of time and the fluctuations of daily life, while prompting renewed attention to the act of looking.
For the exhibition, Mizuno has selected works from the museum’s collection by Yoshitatsu Yanagihara and will show them alongside his own work. The museum describes the presentation as an encounter between sculpture and video, two media that Mizuno considers to share an interest in phenomena generated over time. The resulting installation is intended to bring Yanagihara’s sculptures and Mizuno’s moving-image works into dialogue.
The announced works by Mizuno include the single-channel videos ‘echo’ from 2025, ‘view - light’ from 2026 and ‘shade’ from 2026. The museum’s announcement also includes a record of the exhibition ‘Light and Shade’, dated 2020, photographed by Shinichi Osuka. The Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Memorial Museum was opened in 2003 after the museum received a donation of works from Yoshitatsu Yanagihara, a leading figure in postwar Japanese figurative sculpture. It regularly presents Yanagihara’s works and archival materials. The Y² project began in 2019 with support from the artist’s family, and the current exhibition extends that memorial context through a contemporary artist’s response to the collection.
‘Y² project: Katsunori Mizuno — Engraved Time, Unstable Forms’ will be open from 9:30am to 5pm, with admission until 4:30pm. General admission is ¥310, or ¥240 for groups of 20 or more; student admission is ¥210, or ¥160 for groups. Visitors aged up to and including high-school students enter free. The museum is closed on Mondays, except for 21 September, 12 October and 23 November, as well as on 24 September, 13 October and 24 November 2026.
