Marabouparken konsthall will present a major solo exhibition of Torsten Andersson, 'Språkets tyngd', from 4 July to 4 October 2026. The show is billed as the first major solo presentation of the artist in Stockholm in 40 years and will bring together around thirty paintings, drawings and an early sculptural object spanning his active years.
The exhibition is shown in the institution’s large hall in Sundbyberg, where Marabouparken konsthall has also described the summer as a time to see both Andersson’s work and a parallel presentation by Chiara Bugatti in the upper gallery. The newsletter announcing the programme notes that the hall is open throughout the summer from Wednesday to Sunday, with a short introduction to the exhibitions given daily at 13.00, included in the ticket price.
Andersson, who lived from 1926 to 2009, is presented by Marabouparken as a significant figure in Swedish art history and as an artist who continues to influence younger practitioners. The institution’s exhibition text emphasises that he worked in opposition to the trends and art contexts of his time, while spending much of his active life in what he called 'transit', away from those circles. His work has remained present in the art world through longstanding reference and recognition rather than through constant visibility.
The exhibition title, 'Språkets tyngd', is explained in Marabouparken’s material as referring both to the physical weight of the work and to the importance Andersson placed on artistic language. The institution describes his paintings as large in scale, with distinct, isolated forms occupying the surface, and notes that many of them function as depictions of sculptures. According to the exhibition text, they appear in the picture space with a distinctive sense of presence and gravity.
Marabouparken’s website also points to the breadth of the selection, which includes works from across Andersson’s active period as an artist, along with drawings and one of his early sculptural objects. The institution says the presentation is intended to show the range of an oeuvre that has been represented in collections including Moderna Museet and Malmö Konstmuseum, and that has previously been shown at venues including the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennale, Centre Georges Pompidou and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
The exhibition lands in Andersson’s centenary year. Marabouparken’s text notes that in 2026 he would have turned 100, framing the show as a return to a major Stockholm context after four decades. The institution thanks Galerie Nordenhake Stockholm, Malmö Konstmuseum, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Torsten Anderssons Stiftelse and private lenders for the loan support behind the presentation.
