Upsilon Gallery will make its first presentation in Japan at ‘Tokyo Gendai 2026’, bringing works by Nicolas Carone (1917–2010), Osvaldo Mariscotti (b. 1960) and Ryoko Endo (b. 1951) to a booth at PACIFICO Yokohama. The presentation, designated Booth A06, will run from 11 to 13 September 2026 and will focus on abstraction across post-war and contemporary practices.
The booth places Carone’s work as a historical foundation alongside Mariscotti’s contemporary investigations and Endo’s synthesis of Japanese and Western artistic languages. According to the gallery, the presentation is intended to place artists from different generations and cultural contexts in dialogue through their shared engagement with gesture, colour, rhythm and structure.
Carone’s inclusion marks his first presentation in Japan in more than five decades. The artist is described by the gallery as having made a pivotal contribution to the New York School, the post-war American movement associated with the development of Abstract Expressionism. The presentation will include ‘Wake + Tide’ (1956), an oil painting on linen measuring 34 1/4 by 44 3/4 inches, according to the gallery’s exhibition listing. The announcement materials also identify ‘Untitled’ (1957), an oil work on paper mounted on panel, among the works being presented.
Mariscotti, born in 1960, will be introduced to the Japanese public for the first time through the booth. The gallery characterises his work as an investigation of colour, rhythm and geometry, positioning it as a contemporary continuation of abstraction’s formal possibilities. The announced selection includes ‘The Valley G03’ (2025), an oil painting on canvas.
Endo’s paintings provide a further cross-cultural dimension to the presentation. Born in 1951, she combines traditions associated with Japanese sumi ink calligraphy with the gestural language of Western abstraction. The materials identify ‘See You Again’ (2016), an acrylic painting on canvas, as part of the selection. The gallery presents her work as reflecting both Japanese and American artistic traditions.
‘Tokyo Gendai 2026’ will open with a vernissage at PACIFICO Yokohama on Thursday, 10 September, from 5pm to 8pm. Public hours are listed as noon to 8pm on Friday, 11 September; 11am to 6pm on Saturday, 12 September; and 11am to 5pm on Sunday, 13 September. Upsilon Gallery’s wider programme includes locations in New York, London and Milan, while its London exhibition ‘What Remains Visible’ is scheduled to continue through 26 September 2026.
