Upsilon Gallery will present ‘The wind blows high in space’, a two-person exhibition of paintings and works on paper by John Hoyland RA (1934–2011) and Clyde Hopkins (1946–2018). The exhibition is scheduled to run from 8 October to 14 November 2026 at 64 Grosvenor Street, London, with an opening reception on 8 October.
Curated by Philip Dodd, the exhibition considers the artists’ shared engagement with the sky, weather, inner and outer space, journeys and the sublime. Its title is taken from a piece of writing by Hopkins.
Hoyland and Hopkins were first brought into dialogue in 1980, when Hoyland selected Hopkins for the Hayward Annual. Moving beyond the critical distinctions once drawn between abstraction and figuration, the exhibition situates both artists within a longer Romantic tradition of looking skywards and reimagining landscape through colour, gesture and painterly space.
Works listed for the exhibition include Hoyland’s ‘Forever’, ‘Lunar’, ‘Dark Boundary’, ‘Firmament’ and ‘Moon Eye’, alongside Hopkins’s ‘Untitled’, ‘Untitled (Driving)’, ‘Night Crossing’, ‘Cloudspire Dappled Things’ and ‘Hedon’.
