Artist Liu Wei will join Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Lesley Ma for a public conversation about his commission for The Met Fifth Avenue’s facade. Titled ‘An Evening with Liu Wei,’ the program will take place on Tuesday, September 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium in New York.
The discussion will focus on ‘The Genesis Facade Commission: Liu Wei, Speculation,’ described by the museum as a suite of four large-scale sculptures created for the facade of The Met Fifth Avenue. The event is presented in conjunction with the commission and will also address Liu’s expansive career as a conceptual artist.
The program places the artist’s work within The Met’s ongoing presentation of contemporary art at its Fifth Avenue building. The facade commission is distinct from the museum’s collection displays and other public programs, bringing a contemporary sculptural project into direct relation with the architecture of one of New York’s major art institutions.
Ma, the Met curator participating in the event, will speak with Liu about the commission and his wider practice. The supplied announcement does not provide further details about the individual sculptures, their materials, dimensions, installation date, or the commission’s broader curatorial framework.
The conversation will include interpretation from Mandarin Chinese into English. Admission is free, but advance registration is required, and the museum notes that space is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
‘An Evening with Liu Wei’ is scheduled for September 22 at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, The Met Fifth Avenue, 1000 Fifth Avenue, New York. The program runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
