The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art will present ‘Collection Exhibition II: Special Feature — Photography’ from August 29 through December 27, 2026, showing works from its own holdings through the theme of photography. The museum announced the exhibition in a social-media notice.
Photography accounts for only about 3 percent of the museum’s collection of some 8,400 works, but the holding has grown in recent years, partly through solo exhibitions devoted to photographers. The display brings together newly acquired photographs by Naoki Ishikawa, Yuji Shinomiya and Shinya Fujiwara, together with documentary photographs recording the Gutai Art Association at work and a group of photograms.
Alongside the photography selection, the museum will show Western paintings it counts among its signature holdings, naming Degas’s ‘Portrait of Manet and Madame Manet’, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s ‘Fireman’ and Monet’s ‘Water Lilies, Reflection of a Willow’.
Presented within the same galleries is the eleventh edition of ‘guest room’, the museum’s series introducing contemporary artists, which shows pen drawings by Sachiko Abe, born in 1975 and based in Kitakyushu. Her sheets are filled with ranks of oval marks roughly one to one and a half millimetres across.
The exhibition occupies the Collection Gallery on the third floor of the museum’s main building in Kitakyushu, Japan. It opens on Saturday, August 29 and closes on Sunday, December 27; the museum is open from 9:30 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:00.
