Sarasota Art Museum Presents ‘Beautiful Ideas: The Prints of Sol LeWitt’ Through October 25, 2026

‘Beautiful Ideas: The Prints of Sol LeWitt’ is on view at Sarasota Art Museum from May 17 to October 25, 2026. The museum’s current newsletter lists the exhibition among its shows now on view, running through October 25.

The exhibition is organised by the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut and curated by David S. Areford, professor of art history at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Sarasota Art Museum, on the Ringling College of Art and Design Museum Campus at 1001 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, Florida, is the presenting venue.

According to the presenting museum, the show comprises 44 objects — individual prints together with print series — amounting to more than 100 prints in total. It is arranged in four thematic sections, moving from lines, arcs, circles and grids through bands and colour, then from geometric figures to complex forms, and finally to wavy, curving and looping compositions in all directions.

Sol LeWitt (1928–2007), regarded as a founder of both minimalism and conceptual art, is best known for his large-scale wall drawings and modular structures. Over a four-decade career he also produced more than 350 print projects, spanning lithographs, silkscreens, etchings, aquatints, woodcuts and linocuts. Printmaking suited a conceptual practice in which, as LeWitt put it, the “idea becomes a machine that makes the art.”

The touring exhibition grows out of ‘Strict Beauty: Sol LeWitt Prints’, which Areford curated for the New Britain Museum of American Art from September 18, 2021, to January 9, 2022; the accompanying scholarly publication of the same title, produced in 2020, remains available. The LeWitt prints illustrated on the presenting museum’s exhibition page are drawn from the New Britain Museum’s collection, gifts of the artist.

Members saw the exhibition a day early, at a preview on Saturday, May 16, 2026, before the public opening on May 17.
