Print Center New York will present ‘Parasol Press: Breaking New Ground’ from September 17 through December 19, 2026, bringing together prints from the New York publisher’s formative years. Organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and curated by Rachel Vogel, the exhibition examines Parasol Press’s first decade and its role in introducing Minimalist and Conceptual artists to experimental approaches to printmaking.
Founded in New York in 1970 by Robert Feldman (1937–2022), Parasol Press became known for pairing prominent artists with innovative print processes. The exhibition focuses on work published during the 1970s, a period in which artists engaged with the serial character of printmaking and tested the physical qualities of printed surfaces. The presentation considers the exchange between artists and the medium, as artists altered established print languages while printmaking processes influenced their broader practices.
The selection includes work by Mel Bochner, Chuck Close, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Edda Renouf, Dorothea Rockburne and Robert Ryman, among others. A featured work listed by Print Center New York is Robert Mangold’s ‘C Yellow,’ from ‘Three Aquatints’ (1979), an aquatint and etching.
Vogel, an assistant curator at the Addison Gallery of American Art, focuses on modern and contemporary art. The New York presentation is drawn from a larger retrospective organized by the Addison that surveyed four decades of Parasol Press’s production. That exhibition was described by the institutions as the first comprehensive survey of the publisher’s impact on the field and was accompanied by a publication edited by Vogel detailing the breadth of Parasol’s editions.
Print Center New York, located at 535 West 24th Street in Manhattan, will open the exhibition to the public on September 17. An opening reception is scheduled for that evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The venue is closed to the public from August 24 until September 17 while the fall exhibitions are installed. The institution has also announced related programming, including a September 22 members’ brunch tour with Vogel timed to The Armory Show; an October 3 tour and coffee hour with master printer and publisher Jacob Samuel; a virtual talk with Vogel and Judy Hecker on October 28; and a December 12 tour with Andrew Witkin of Krakow Witkin Gallery in Boston. The listed programs address the exhibition’s technical, historical and collaborative dimensions.
Two separate pop-up presentations will accompany the fall opening at Print Center New York. ‘Mira Dayal: Nets’ will be on view from September 17 through November 21 in the Leslie and Johanna Garfield Lobby, while ‘Caroline Ongpin: Passage’ will run during the same period in the East Gallery. Ongpin’s presentation features works made during her 2025 Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellowship at Dieu Donné; a complementary selection of her fellowship works is scheduled at Dieu Donné in Brooklyn from November 9 through December 11, 2026.
