The Print Center’s presentation, 'Parasol Press: Breaking New Ground,' will focus on the publisher’s first decade and its emergence as one of the most influential print publishers of the twentieth century, running from September 17 through December 19, 2026. Curated by Rachel Vogel, assistant curator at the Addison Gallery of American Art, the presentation is drawn from a larger retrospective exhibition shown at the Addison earlier this year.
Robert Feldman founded Parasol Press in New York in 1970. The press came to prominence by introducing a generation of Minimalist and Conceptual artists to printmaking, including artists who embraced the medium’s serial nature and explored the materiality of printed surfaces.
The exhibition presents printmaking as a reciprocal process: artists reshaped the language of the medium, while printmaking reshaped their artistic practices. Among the featured works is Robert Mangold’s 'C Yellow, from Three Aquatints,' a 1979 aquatint and etching.
The 1970s works on view include artists such as Mel Bochner, Chuck Close, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Edda Renouf, Dorothea Rockburne and Robert Ryman. The Print Center presentation is drawn from the Addison retrospective, which covered four decades of Parasol Press’s production. That retrospective was described as the first comprehensive survey of Parasol’s impact on the field and was accompanied by the first publication to detail the breadth of the press’s editions, edited by Vogel.
