TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes will screen Nagisa Oshima’s ‘In the Realm of the Senses’ on Thursday 20 August at 19:00, as part of its summer cinema cycle ‘50 Years Later’. The screening will take place in the museum’s auditorium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with free admission until the room reaches capacity.
The programme, organised by TEA’s conservator of Film and Video, Emilio Ramal, brings together feature films released in 1976 that the museum describes as reflecting major social, political and aesthetic transformations of the period. Sessions in the cycle are scheduled for Thursdays at 19:00 and are presented in the original version with Spanish subtitles.
Oshima’s film is described by TEA as an acclaimed and controversial work of Japanese cinema. Starring Eiko Matsuda and Tatsuya Fuji, it is based on real events that occurred in Tokyo in the 1930s and follows the passionate, obsessive sentimental and erotic relationship between a former courtesan and the owner of a hotel.
The museum’s description presents the relationship as one that pushes desire to its ultimate consequences. The film is classified by TEA as not recommended for viewers under 18. The screening is listed as a presentation of a key work of the Japanese avant-garde and of international auteur cinema.
‘In the Realm of the Senses’ received the Best Director award at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival, according to TEA. The museum’s programme places the film within a broader historical selection focused on works from 1976 and their engagement with the period’s changing cultural and social conditions.
