Renovated ‘Pheasant Incense Burner Room’ Puts Ninsei National Treasure on Permanent View

The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art in Kanazawa keeps two ceramics by Nonomura Ninsei on permanent display: the National Treasure ‘Color-painted Pheasant Incense Burner’ (色絵雉香炉) and the Important Cultural Property ‘Color-painted Female Pheasant Incense Burner’ (色絵雌雉香炉). Both are identified by the museum as works by Ninsei and are shown together in its collection exhibition.

The pair has a gallery of its own: Gallery No. 1, the ‘Pheasant Incense Burner Room’, on the second floor of the main building. The museum fully renovated that room and reopened it at 9.30am on 24 March 2026, describing the whole space as upgraded and the two works as easier to see. New content for the museum’s VR theatre, on the Ishikawa-trained lacquer master Matsuda Gonroku, was released the same day.

On 17 August 2026 the museum drew attention to the room again in a social media post, noting that the National Treasure can be seen “at any time” in the collection exhibition and that this year’s renewal has made the works easier to appreciate.

The item concerns the museum’s permanent collection programme rather than a temporary exhibition, so no opening or closing dates apply, and the museum gives no indication that the ceramics are due to travel or be replaced.
