‘Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec’ runs through September 20, 2026, after opening on April 4. The exhibition presents approximately 50 works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec from the San Diego Museum of Art’s permanent collection.

It explores Toulouse-Lautrec’s portraits of Paris nightlife and Montmartre characters, cabaret culture, and his color lithographic posters.

Working in the popular and modern art form of the color lithograph, Toulouse-Lautrec reached unprecedented audiences. His visual language was influenced by Impressionists including Edgar Degas, his close friend Vincent van Gogh, and the flattened color patterns of Japanese graphic arts.

Featured works include ‘Moulin Rouge—La Goulue’ (1891), ‘Eldorado: Aristide Bruant’ (1892), ‘Jane Avril’ (1893), and ‘The Troupe of Mademoiselle Eglantine’ (1896).
