The Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, Florida, marked Hale Woodruff’s birthday in a social-media post highlighting a study for the artist’s mural series ‘Art of the Negro.’ The museum identified Woodruff as a Paris-trained African American artist who was nationally known as a painter, draftsman and printmaker.
Published on August 26, 2026, the post presented the work as a study for a larger mural commission rather than as an independent image. According to the museum’s description, the ‘Art of the Negro’ series was commissioned for the Trevor Arnett Library at Clark-Atlanta University.
The project places the study within Woodruff’s work for an Atlanta university and connects it to the artist’s broader practice across painting, drawing and printmaking. The museum’s post did not provide additional information about the work’s title, date, materials, dimensions or present display status.
