The Architekturzentrum Wien is presenting ‘Hot Questions – Cold Storage’, a collection exhibition examining Austrian architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries through original plans, models, photographs and other archival objects. The exhibition is on view in Exhibition Hall 1 at the Architekturzentrum Wien in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, which lists the presentation among its current exhibitions.
The show draws on what the institution describes as the most significant and comprehensive collection of Austrian architecture from the modern and contemporary periods. Rather than offering a straightforward chronological survey, it places key objects—both prominent and less familiar—at the centre of a series of seven “hot questions” intended to activate what the museum calls its “silent storage”. Many of the original objects are being shown publicly for the first time.
The collection presentation also takes a critical approach to the established narrative of Austrian architectural history. According to the museum’s description, it addresses the cultural, social, economic and technical implications of the country’s building activity while questioning the gaps and exclusions within the traditional canon. The exhibition introduces previously overlooked actors and brings lesser-known sources into view, replacing a single national-historical account with a multiperspectival approach.
Its display is organised through varied object landscapes rather than a conventional sequence of framed documents. The institution presents this arrangement as a sensory and atmospheric experience, allowing drawings, photographs, models and other collection materials to be encountered together. The accompanying publication, ‘Hot Questions Cold Storage: Architecture from Austria. The Permanent Exhibition at the Az W’, is available through the Architekturzentrum Wien’s shop and online store.
The exhibition forms part of the Architekturzentrum Wien’s wider work as Austria’s architecture museum and as a centre for the preservation, research and public presentation of architectural documents. Its collection holdings include architectural archives, project collections, photographers’ archives and materials relating to architectural theory, supporting exhibitions that connect individual objects with broader debates about how architecture is recorded and remembered.
‘Hot Questions – Cold Storage’ is open daily from 10am to 6pm, with extended hours until 8pm on Wednesdays. The museum’s current programme also includes temporary exhibitions and events, but these are separate from the collection presentation, which remains on view in Exhibition Hall 1.
