New-Media Visions, Metamorphic Dolls and Russell James in Berlin

Three exhibitions opening across Europe pair established practices with striking new bodies of work: Suzanne Treister’s technologically charged retrospective in Łódź, Noah Umur Kanber’s dialogue with Ovartaci in Aarhus, and Russell James’s latest photographic presentation in Berlin.

Suzanne Treister’s “Prorocze śnienie” opens at ms¹, Museum of Art in Łódź, on 9 October and remains on view through 14 March 2027. The exhibition is the first retrospective in Poland devoted to the British pioneer of digital, internet and new-media art, bringing together more than four decades of work across interactive technologies, painting, video, photography and drawing. Early series including “Video Game Paintings” and “Software” appear alongside “HEXEN 5.0,” which addresses artificial intelligence, the climate crisis and quantum physics. An English curator-led tour with Treister and curators Jessie Robertson and Gabriela Sitek follows on 10 October.

Museum Ovartaci in Aarhus will open Noah Umur Kanber’s “Kuk kuk, er det mig der er skør?” on 5 November, marking the artist’s first exhibition at a Danish art museum. Kanber’s work will be shown alongside that of Ovartaci in an exhibition examining identity, gender, metamorphosis and life beyond fixed social categories. For the project, Kanber has created 56 dolls, one for each year Ovartaci was hospitalized. The dolls will be presented with ceramics, copperplate etchings and works on paper, bringing Ovartaci’s mythological universe into a new visual language. Kanber will also perform at the opening at 5pm.
