France, 1864–1901
French painter, printmaker, and caricaturist who captured the theatrical life of late 19th-century Paris, particularly the bohemian entertainers of Montmartre. Despite physical challenges from a childhood injury, Toulouse-Lautrec produced prolific works that exemplify Post-Impressionism through acute observation and minimal, expressive technique. His advertising lithographs elevated the popular medium to high art.
