Spain, 1746–1828
Spanish painter and printmaker considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Often called the last of the Old Masters and first of the moderns, Goya served as court painter to three Spanish kings while creating works ranging from Rococo tapestries to dark paintings documenting the atrocities of war. His paintings, prints, and engravings remain foundational to Western art history.
