The Utah Museum of Fine Arts will bring visitors to Rozel Point at the Great Salt Lake on October 3, 2026, for the 'Spiral Jetty Community Meet-up', a public event centered on Robert Smithson’s landmark earthwork 'Spiral Jetty'. The museum says the afternoon gathering is part of Land Art Week, a new three-day program it is launching with Powder Art Foundation and other arts organizations in Utah from October 1 to 3.
According to the UMFA, Land Art Week will include talks, tours and site visits focused on Utah’s landscape and its legacy of land art. The museum describes the initiative as a celebration of art in dialogue with place, and says it is designed to let participants explore iconic works while meeting artists shaping the field today. The October program includes a Thursday artist talk with Lita Albuquerque, a Friday open house at Powder Art Foundation, and the Saturday visit to Spiral Jetty.
The 'Spiral Jetty Community Meet-up' is scheduled for 1 to 4 pm on October 3 at Rozel Point. UMFA’s event listing invites members, families, teachers and students of all ages to explore the landscape, listen to music, create art and learn about the environment of the Great Salt Lake. The museum also says programming and activities will be shared in more detail later, and that visitors can follow a 'Spiral Jetty' self-guide at their own pace.
Smithson’s 'Spiral Jetty' was created in 1970 and is located off Rozel Point in the north arm of the Great Salt Lake. The UMFA describes it as a 15-foot-wide coil stretching more than 1,500 feet into the lake, built from black basalt rocks and earth gathered from the site. In the museum’s account, the work has become one of the most famous large-scale earthworks of its period and has come to epitomize land art.
The museum’s Land Art Week page places 'Spiral Jetty' within a broader regional story, noting that Utah is also home to Nancy Holt’s 'Sun Tunnels' and that the state’s landscape has long influenced artistic responses to place. The page also points to the Powder Art Foundation’s work at Powder Mountain in Eden, Utah, where site-specific artworks are spread across 8,000 acres of alpine terrain and encountered on snow or along hiking trails.
Alongside the October events, the UMFA has been promoting tools for self-guided visits to 'Spiral Jetty' and 'Sun Tunnels' through the STQRY Guide app, as well as family backpacks that can be checked out from the museum, the Salt Lake City Library or the Brigham City Museum. For the October 3 meet-up, the museum says participants can join educators and partners for art-making and experiential programs at the Great Salt Lake.
