Gustavo Vélez’s ‘Le Dimensioni dell’Equilibrio’ fills Pietrasanta’s squares until 20 September

‘Le Dimensioni dell’Equilibrio’, a city-wide exhibition by the Colombian sculptor Gustavo Vélez, is on view in Pietrasanta from 11 June to 20 September 2026. It is presented by the City of Pietrasanta and curated by Francesca Sborgi with a contribution from Eike Schmidt, and it marks thirty years of Vélez’s career and of his working life in Pietrasanta, the Tuscan marble town he chose as a base in 1996.

The route links seven sites. In the historic centre the works occupy Piazza del Duomo, which the press material calls the heart of the exhibition, the Complesso di Sant’Agostino, Piazza Carducci, Piazzetta San Martino and Piazza dello Statuto; at Marina di Pietrasanta they continue in Piazza XXIV Maggio and on the Pontile. The sculptures are monumental works in white Carrara marble, bronze and mirror-finished steel, set against the town’s historic architecture, the Apuan Alps and the sea.

Inside the Complesso di Sant’Agostino the exhibition keeps two schedules: from 11 to 28 June and again from 30 August to 20 September it opens Tuesday to Friday from 18.00 to 23.00 and at weekends from 10.00 to 13.00 and 18.00 to 23.00; from 29 June to 30 August it opens daily from 19.00 to 24.00, with an additional 10.00 to 13.00 slot on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Vélez, born in Medellín in 1975, divides his practice between his Colombian studio, where he makes his steel pieces, and Pietrasanta, where he works in marble and bronze with local artisans. He has described the show as a way of affirming his commitment to the region, with geometry as the thread that ties the new sculptures to those already installed around the town.

In Colombia the project is being promoted by Galería Duque Arango, the Medellín gallery that represents Vélez and lists the Pietrasanta exhibition alongside two shows at its own Medellín spaces running until 12 September.
