Mobile Museum of Art in Mobile, Alabama, will open 'GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery' on September 1, 2026, a year-long exhibition that traces how five artists moved from graffiti and street-based self-expression into the gallery and museum sphere. The museum says the show will run through September 1, 2027, and describes it as its first and only venue for the project, presented in collaboration with Masterworks and Level & Co Gallery.
According to the museum’s exhibition page, 'GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery' follows the trajectory of work associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, KAWS and Banksy. Rather than offering a comprehensive history of graffiti, the exhibition focuses on how those artists’ practices developed from unauthorized acts on public surfaces into work that now commands institutional recognition. The museum frames the project as an investigation into five intertwined practices that grew beyond the street level.
The exhibition connects the artists through recurring ideas of immediacy, public accessibility and cultural commentary. The museum highlights Basquiat’s cryptic script, Haring’s subway drawings, Scharf’s pop surrealism, KAWS’ advertising interventions and Banksy’s political stencils as examples of graffiti’s influence on contemporary art. It also emphasizes the movement from ephemeral public spaces to permanent collections as a defining feature of the works on view.
Among the featured works listed on the museum page are Banksy’s 'Stop & Search' (2020), KAWS’ 'CHUM (KCO13)' (2016), Keith Haring’s 'Untitled' (1983) and Kenny Scharf’s 'Evolution Revolution I' (2023). The museum notes that immersive presentations of KAWS’ 'CHUM' paintings and Scharf’s 'Evolution Revolution' series will underscore the roles of repetition and scale in graffiti, while the unconventional surfaces and iconography associated with Basquiat, Haring and Banksy bring “the grit of city streets” onto gallery walls.
The works are drawn from the collection of the Masterworks Foundation, and the museum identifies the exhibition as being organized in that context. Support for the project is listed from a range of sponsors and foundations, including the Crampton Trust, the Mobile Museum of Art Foundation, the J. L. Bedsole Foundation and Mobile County, along with additional donors named on the exhibition page.
The museum is also scheduling programming around the exhibition’s run. Listed events include a ‘GATEWAY Panel Reception’ on August 20, 2026, held off-site at the Innovation Portal, 358 St Louis St, a members-only opening reception on August 27, and and a series of monthly ‘GATEWAY Tour’ talks running from September 3, 2026 to August 5, 2027, each 6:30–7:30 p.m. at $5 for members and $10 for not-yet-members. A screening of Banksy’s documentary 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' is scheduled for September 10, 2026.
Mobile Museum of Art describes the project as a “blockbuster exhibition” and says the venue will be the first and only site for it. The exhibition launches September 1, 2026, and remains on view until September 1, 2027.
