Kunsthal Rotterdam is presenting 'The Grand Summer Hut', a free, interactive installation by Rotterdam-based graphic artist Teuntje Fleur, on the stairs of the Auditorium until 30 August 2026. The work turns the staircase into a playful environment of colour and shape, inviting visitors to wander through a landscape made up of triangles, squares and circles and to create their own artwork while moving through the installation.
According to the Kunsthal, the project unfolds as an imaginative scene stretching from the bottom to the top of the Auditorium stairs. At its centre is 'the hut that was always there', a large structure visitors can enter to read, play together and take a break. The institution describes the surrounding setting as a forest of colourful sculptures, with curious viewing boxes and felt shapes that allow visitors to make their own sculpture for the fantasy landscape.
The installation’s title connects to Fleur’s own memory of the huts she built as a child. The Kunsthal says the idea of 'the hut that was always there' comes from those early constructions, which she associated with a world detached from reality and a different sense of time. In the installation, fantasy, relaxation and togetherness are presented as central elements, with the hut functioning as a place to pause as well as to participate.
Fleur is described by the Kunsthal as a Rotterdam-based graphic artist known for a colourful visual language built from playful shapes, patterns and graphic compositions. Her work explores how colour, form and imagination can connect with what the museum calls the inner child, often using primary colours and recognisable geometric forms. The installation extends that approach into a public, walk-through experience rather than a conventional gallery display.
The work is free for visitors to join with a valid Kunsthal admission ticket. The museum also notes that admission is free for visitors aged 18 and under. In the installation information, Kunsthal adds that the route on the Auditorium steps is less accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
The project is part of a summer programme at Kunsthal Rotterdam that also includes 'Flowers Forever', on view until 30 August 2026, and several other summer activities listed by the institution. In the exhibition page for 'The Grand Summer Hut', Kunsthal presents the installation as an invitation to spend part of the summer holiday on the Auditorium stairs, amid a colourful explosion of forms created by Teuntje Fleur.
