Portland Art Museum will hold an educator welcome and tour on August 12, offering free admission, light refreshments, and a close look at some of the museum’s newer and best-known spaces. The program is scheduled from 1:00 to 2:30 pm at the museum’s Finley Learning Studio, and is aimed at teachers who want to learn more about the institution’s programs and resources while touring its collections and architecture.

According to the museum’s educator program materials, participants will discuss educator programs and resources before visiting the Lana and Chris Finley Learning Studio, the Silver Family Youth and Community Gallery, the Mark Rothko Pavilion, and ‘Black Art and Experiences’. The tour is framed as an introduction to the museum’s learning initiatives as well as a guided visit through selected spaces in the building.

The August 12 event is part of Portland Art Museum’s wider educator programming. On its educators page, the museum describes its workshops and lectures as professional development opportunities that support integrating the arts into teaching across disciplines and grade levels. The museum also says the programs are free of charge and offer Professional Development Units, and that all educators are welcome, from K-12 through college as well as independent and nonprofit-based educators.

The museum’s educators page also outlines the work of the PAM Educator Advisory, a group that collaborates with museum staff to help educators and students connect, learn, and build community through art. The advisory holds four in-person meetings each year, participates in educator programs, and convenes occasional workgroups. Membership includes educators across disciplines and grade levels, and members receive complimentary Dual Memberships to the museum in appreciation of their volunteer service.

The August 12 tour also falls within ‘Educator Free Weeks’, which run from August 1 to August 16, 2026, for Oregon and Washington educators. During that period, educators receive free admission to Portland Art Museum and six other cultural attractions by identifying themselves at admission, with no school ID required. The museum says the free-weeks program also includes access to educator-focused events and tours, plus classroom-ready resources such as state standards-aligned lesson plans, digital materials, and professional development opportunities.

Portland Art Museum’s email announcement presents the tour as part of a broader invitation to educators to reconnect with the museum’s collections and programs. The museum says the event is designed to let educators discuss resources, explore the building, and leave “renewed and inspired by art and community.” Admission to the August 12 tour is free, and light snacks and cookies will be provided.
