Getty has opened 'Odilon Redon: Otherworldly Visions' at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, presenting more than 40 works by Odilon Redon drawn from the museum’s collection. The exhibition runs through October 18, 2026, in the Museum West Pavilion on the Plaza Level and is included with free, timed-entry admission.
The show focuses on Redon’s reputation for enigmatic imagery and on the darker, more fantastical side of his practice. According to Getty, the exhibition brings together charcoal drawings, lithographs, and pastels that reveal what the museum describes as the artist’s “haunting darkness and luminous color.” The works trace a visual world shaped by dreamlike invention rather than straightforward narrative.
Redon, who lived from 1840 to 1916, is presented here as an artist whose sources ranged widely across religion, mythology, literature, and modern science. Getty frames the exhibition as an opportunity to look closely at how those influences fed a singular imagination, one that explored both the beauty of nature and the depths of fantasy. The presentation is offered in English and Spanish.
The checklist of selected works points to the range of media and imagery included in the display. Among the works named by Getty are 'The Battle of the Bones', 'Light', 'Everywhere Eyeballs Are Aflame', 'Apparition', 'Head within an Aureole', 'Then There Appears a Singular Being, Having the Head of a Man on the Body of a Fish', 'Baronne de Domecy', and 'Orpheus'. The selection shows Redon moving between black-and-white lithographic experimentation and pastel works with vivid tonal contrasts.
