Getty has announced a major, multi-year acquisition of photographs by Josef Breitenbach, described in the announcement as a refugee artist.
Among the photographs identified as part of the acquisition is Breitenbach’s photocollage ‘We New Yorkers’. The work depicts a human circulatory system stretching across a cityscape, bringing anatomical imagery into a metropolitan view.
Getty frames ‘We New Yorkers’ with the question: “How does a transplant begin the journey of belonging in their new home?” The question accompanies the acquisition’s description of the collage without assigning it a single answer.
The acquisition will take place over multiple years and centres Breitenbach’s photographs, including ‘We New Yorkers’.
