The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman is counting down the final weeks of 'On the Edge: The Abstract World of Frederick Hammersley', an exhibition of more than 45 paintings and drawings that remains on view through September 6. The museum says the show traces Frederick Hammersley’s pursuit of abstraction across spontaneous compositions, geometric designs, and works that sought to break from tradition.
Installed at the museum, 'On the Edge' focuses on the artist’s place in the mid-century Hard-edge movement, a style defined by precise geometric compositions and a strong emphasis on the relationship between color and form. The exhibition draws from the Hugon Collection and presents works that highlight Hammersley’s distinctive approach to abstraction, where sharp edges and clearly defined shapes are central to the visual language.
The museum’s August newsletter described the presentation as featuring Hammersley’s playful approach to hard-edge abstraction through geometric shapes, organic forms, and vibrant colors. It also noted that visitors still have time to see the exhibition before it closes, framing the current run as a late-summer opportunity to encounter the artist’s work in depth.
According to the museum, 'On the Edge: The Abstract World of Frederick Hammersley' includes more than 45 paintings and drawings from the Hugon Collection. The exhibition is organized by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and supported by the Hugon Family and generous donors to the museum’s endowment.
The museum is also programming a related family event, 'Spotlight: Hammer Time', on Saturday, August 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. The hands-on session is inspired by the exhibition and is designed for visitors of all ages, with activities centered on geometric shapes, organic forms, and vibrant colors.
Admission details for the event place children and teens 17 and under at free entry, while general admission for adults is $12. The museum notes that Spotlight programs are included with museum admission and are made possible through the generous support of the Norman Arts Council.
'On the Edge: The Abstract World of Frederick Hammersley' opened May 8, 2026, and continues at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art through September 6, 2026.
