Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia is presenting ‘Bruce Gilden. A Closer Look’, described by Fondazione Brescia Musei as the first major Italian monographic exhibition dedicated to the American photographer. The show runs at the museum until 23 August 2026 and brings together 80 photographs, with a focus on Gilden’s long-running attention to faces and street life.

Organised by Fondazione Brescia Musei, the exhibition is curated by Denis Curti in collaboration with Bruce Gilden and Magnum Photos. The museum’s website identifies Gilden, born in New York in 1946, as a full member of Magnum Photos and one of the pioneers of Street Photography. The project is presented as part of a broader exhibition programme developed in close dialogue with the artist, and the site notes a companion installation, ‘Grace / Grazia. Bruce Gilden per Raffaello’, at Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo.

The central section of ‘A Closer Look’ revolves around ‘Faces’ (2013-2024), a body of portraits made with flash and characterised on the museum’s site by a direct, graphic approach to the subject. The photographs are drawn from cities across the United States, England, Mexico, Greece, Colombia and Japan. According to the museum, the images register city life while also emerging from a deliberate relationship and dialogue with the people Gilden photographs.

Alongside the colour portraits, the exhibition includes an earlier black-and-white sequence from the photographer’s beginnings, dating to 1968 and extending across several places and periods. The site lists material made in Japan with members of the Yakuza, as well as work from Haiti, France, Ireland, England and New York. Two audiovisual contributions complete the display: an interview with British photographer and reporter Martin Parr in which Gilden discusses his life and career, and a video produced by Magnum Photos.

The museum frames the exhibition as a significant international project and one of the main appointments in the ninth edition of the Brescia Photo Festival, which it dates to 26-29 March 2026. The exhibition also continues a line of focus on contemporary American photographers that the Musei Civici di Brescia began in 2023 with David LaChapelle and continued the following year with Joel Meyerowitz.

The museum’s visitor information lists the exhibition dates as 27 March to 23 August 2026 at Museo di Santa Giulia. For July and August, admission to ‘Bruce Gilden. A Closer Look’ is set at a special price of €5 for all visitors. The site also notes that ticket holders for the exhibition can visit the site-specific ‘Grace / Grazia. Bruce Gilden per Raffaello’ at Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo at a reduced rate.

An additional immersive component, ‘Double Reality – Il monumento e il suo doppio’, is also mentioned in the museum’s summer programme pages as a virtual reality experience included in the admission ticket. The email material circulated by Fondazione Brescia Musei says the project explores monument and its double through art and dance performances, and that it is accessible within the museum ticket.
