Susquehanna Art Museum has opened 'Slippages', a presentation of hand-printed photographs by American artist Linda Cummings, in the museum’s Dōshi Gallery in the lobby. The exhibition runs from July 31 to October 4, 2026, according to the museum’s calendar listing. The museum’s announcement describes the project as a ten-year photographic series begun in 1992, shortly after Anita Hill’s testimony to the U.S. Congress alleging sexual misconduct by then-nominee Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.
The museum’s exhibition text frames 'Slippages' as a response to that political and cultural moment, while also situating it within the upheavals that accompanied the transition from the Industrial Age of the 1990s to the Information Age. In the gallery description, Cummings is said to have tossed an empty slip into the air “in resistance, and defiance of gravity,” inserting “hysterical gestures” into highly gendered environments while photographing the garment’s movement through the frame.
The works on view are hand-printed photographs made on location with a handheld SLR camera and single-frame 35mm film, then printed on silver gelatin paper. The museum says the resulting series comprises 10 portfolios that capture moments from Cummings’s decade-long performance practice. The exhibition page also notes that the artist’s guerrilla actions introduced something “out of place” into the field of possibility, and that the photographs imagine new arrangements and associations within established order.
Cummings’s project is presented as part of a broader practice concerned with perceptions of self, the power of place, and the relationship between the body and natural phenomena such as light, wind, water and gravity. The museum’s event page for an August 12 artist discussion and book signing describes 'Slippages' as a landmark publication of photographs that includes more than 60 duotone images spanning 1992 to 2003, and says the book explores the last vestiges of analog photography. Limited books will be available for purchase at the event, with advance copies available through Distributed Art Publishers.
The same page says the exhibition’s photographs convey Cummings’s “defiance, exuberance and anxiety” amid the upheavals of a declining industrial age and dawning digital era. It also states that the images express an innovative approach to photographic narrative through actions performed and photographed by the artist on-site, in locations including steel mills, coal mines, churches, hospitals and stadiums, many of which have since disappeared.
'Slippages' is accompanied by a public program on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, beginning at 5:30 pm, when Cummings will join visitors for a discussion of the exhibition followed by a book signing at 6:30 pm. The event is free with standard museum admission, but RSVP is required. SAM members may RSVP free of charge, while non-members are directed to purchase tickets at standard or discounted admission levels.
The museum’s exhibition page lists select works including 'Re-Actor I' (1999), 'Chasm' (2002) and 'Operating Theater II' (2002). Susquehanna Art Museum notes that it is a non-collecting museum and that its galleries feature rotating exhibitions throughout the year.
