Serpentine Galleries has announced that visual artist, writer and musician Shala Miller will make her UK debut at Park Nights 2026 with a new commission in the Serpentine Pavilion. The performance is scheduled for 2 and 3 October 2026 at 8pm, placing Miller’s work inside the latest pavilion designed by LANZA atelier, the architecture commissioned for Serpentine’s summer season in Kensington Gardens.
The announcement positions Miller within Park Nights, a programme Serpentine has run since 2002 to present new work across art, music, film, theatre, dance, literature, philosophy, fashion and technology. According to the institution, each year’s commissions respond to the pavilion design, using the temporary structure as a stage for interdisciplinary artistic interventions. The 2026 edition runs from July to October, and Miller’s appearance closes the season.
Serpentine describes Miller’s new commission as a performance built from improvised vocal and string experiments that create moments of harmony and dissonance. In the museum’s wording, the work will echo through the pavilion and engage themes that underpin her practice, including bodily memory and internal tension. The project is identified as her first presentation in the UK, giving the London appearance added significance for an artist whose practice spans photography, printmaking, video, writing, performance and music.
The artist’s background, as provided by Serpentine, places her among a generation of multidisciplinary practitioners whose work moves between visual art and live performance. Miller, who is based in New York City, has exhibited recently at the 59th Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, MMK Frankfurt, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the International Center of Photography in New York, among other venues. Her performances have also been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Artist’s Space and Performance Space New York. Serpentine notes that her artist book Tender Noted was included in MoMA’s list of 10 Favourite Photo Books of 2022, and that her work is held in collections including MoMA and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
The Park Nights season as a whole underscores Serpentine’s ongoing interest in live work that rethinks the relationship between architecture and performance. The 2026 programme also includes performances by Sophia Stel, Chanel Beads and Ebun Sodipo, each of whom is set to activate the pavilion on selected dates across the summer and early autumn. Serpentine presents the pavilion itself as a free public commission from 6 June to 25 October 2026, with Park Nights tickets priced at £10 and £7 concession.
Miller’s debut matters because it extends Park Nights’ role as a venue where contemporary art meets experimental sound in a public architectural setting. By framing a UK debut within the pavilion, Serpentine is spotlighting live practice as a central part of contemporary art discourse, not a peripheral one. The commission also reinforces the pavilion’s function as a site for testing how bodies, voices and built space can shape one another in real time.
