A group exhibition drawn mostly from the collection of Hamburger Kunsthalle is on view at Cukrarna in Ljubljana from July 7, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Titled 'untranquil now', the show brings together more than 20 international artists of different generations in a presentation that Cukrarna describes as a constellation of narratives and resonances. The exhibition is staged in the venue’s upper-floor galleries and is presented in collaboration with Hamburger Kunsthalle.
According to the exhibition text, the project uses films, artifacts, images and events to explore complexity, modes of perception and contradictory states. Rather than offering a single storyline, 'untranquil now' connects works through historical resonances and coincidences, setting political and social circumstances alongside spatial and sensory experience. Cukrarna says the exhibition draws out historical sediment and its contemporary reverberations, and frames the encounter in relation to memory, heritage and privacy.
The artist list includes Francis Alÿs, Rosa Barba, Éric Baudelaire, Manon de Boer and Latifa Laâbissi, Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Tacita Dean, Peter Friedl, Coco Fusco, Coco Fusco and Paula Heredia, Dora García, GENERAL IDEA, Hsu Chia-Wei, Pierre Huyghe, Joan Jonas, Gordon Matta-Clark, RAQS Media Collective, Anri Sala, Nida Sinnokrot, Nasrin Tabatabai and Babak Afrassiabi, Rosemarie Trockel, Kara Walker and Paola Yacoub. The show is curated by Dr. Corinne Diserens.
Cukrarna’s text emphasizes the exhibition’s transdisciplinary structure. The works move between stage and off-stage settings, with scenes and references that include modernist buildings, social housing, rooftops, public space, parks, abandoned sites, archaeological sites and industrial platforms. The institution says these settings help reveal structures of power while opening out multiple narratives. It also cites Edward Said’s idea of “contrapuntal consciousness” in describing how the exhibition approaches the relationship between art, history and the present.
The exhibition page credits production and coordination to Janja Buzečan, public relations to Mojca Podlesek, education and andragogy to Nina Vošnjak, production assistance to Neža Vengust, design to Ajdin Bašić, technical direction to Jože Kalan, technical support to Andrej Črepinšek, Alen Đudarić and Martin Lovšin, and slide-projector restoration to Marko Turkuš. The show is listed with admission at 10 euros for adults and 8 euros for school pupils, students, retirees, unemployed visitors and people with disabilities, with a family ticket priced at 22 euros.
The exhibition also appears in Cukrarna’s broader programme alongside solo presentations by Yein Lee and Phil Collins, but 'untranquil now' stands as the main collaborative display in the current schedule. Its dates place it across the second half of 2026 and into the start of 2027, with the exhibition running in Ljubljana’s Cukrarna galleries until January 3, 2027.
