An exhibition by British artist Mark Leckey is being presented in Cukrarna’s basement exhibition space as part of this year’s Indigo festival, with Brandon Rosenbluth as curator. Cukrarna is part of the public institution Muzej in galerije mesta Ljubljane, or MGML.
‘Sanje angleškega mladostnika, 1964–1999 n. št.’ is a 23-minute collage that follows Leckey’s life from his birth in 1964 to the turn of the millennium. The video combines fragments of music, pop culture, film, television and internet imagery, bringing personal memories into contact with collective images of British culture.
Through the evolution of British culture and media—from radio and television through film to the internet—the film explores the persistence of identity and memory. The work reaches its climax in the section ‘Time to Totality,’ which evokes collective visions around the turn of the millennium and includes performances by The Beatles and Joy Division.
Leckey, born in Birkenhead in 1964, is a British artist and a winner of the Turner Prize. His video work ‘Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore,’ from 1999, was assembled from footage of the British underground rave scene.
