Pace opens ‘KNOTTING, TYING, FOLDING’, an exhibition of sculptures by Lynda Benglis, at 540 West 25th Street in New York on 11 September 2026, with a reception the evening before, Thursday 10 September, from 6 to 8 pm. The show runs through 24 October.
The selection spans works made between 1972 and 2024 in glazed ceramic, bronze, glass, pleated metal and paper, and singles out rarely exhibited glass sculptures from 1985. The earliest piece is ‘Sparkle Knot IV’ (1972), a knotted tube of wire mesh coated in plaster, paint and glitter, which the gallery presents as the starting point for processes Benglis went on to rework across later series — the gold-leafed and metallised pleats and glass of the 1980s, the extruded and folded ceramics of the 2010s, and the recent Elephant Necklace and paper works, in which knotting opens out into more expansive forms.
Benglis emerged in the late 1960s amid Postminimalism and distinguished herself from her contemporaries through vivid colour and sensuous, organic surfaces, working outward from beeswax, latex and polyurethane foam to plaster, gold, vaporised metals, glass, ceramic and paper. The exhibition traces that material range across more than five decades.
The show is one of several Pace is opening across its US galleries in September, alongside presentations by Torkwase Dyson, Arlene Shechet, Asher Liftin and David Lynch.
