David Smith was a pioneering figure in American sculpture, and his experiments with welded steel transformed the possibilities of three-dimensional form. Trained as a painter, he also maintained a prolific practice on paper, using tempera, gouache, ink, and oil.
In 1962, Smith traveled to Voltri, Italy, where he produced twenty-seven sculptures in an abandoned steel factory in just one month.
Created that same year, ‘Voltri, 1962’ reflects this period in Smith’s practice.
