'Jacob Hashimoto: Giant Arc' is an ongoing installation in the Roberts Family Gallery on Floor 1, where the public can access the exhibition for free.
At SFMOMA, Hashimoto will create the largest work of his career, mixing nearly 75,000 elements into a cloud canopy that will cover the Roberts Family Gallery from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.
Hashimoto creates his installations through repetition and composition, with each work comprising thousands of hand-built kites made from bamboo and Japanese paper, suspended together into complex assemblages that seem to float through the air.
The kites may form clusters that are blank or solid-colored, while others carry layered, colorful collaged-paper graphics. SFMOMA characterizes these kite installations as blending sculpture, design, and environment.
Related events include the opening celebration for 'Giant Arc' by Jacob Hashimoto, scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m.; the family program 'Kite Making with Mariel Paat,' on Sunday, September 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and the workshop 'Make a Kite with Jacob Hashimoto,' on Saturday, November 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
