The Schubert Geburtshaus in Vienna, the house where Franz Schubert was born in 1797, is to reopen on 26 January 2028 following a comprehensive renovation and redesign. The Wien Museum, which runs the site, has released the first architectural renderings of the project, timed to the 200th anniversary of the composer's death in 2028.
The listed building at Nussdorfer Strasse 54 is one of the few surviving suburban houses from Schubert's period. The works will make it barrier-free, modernise its technical systems and carefully restore the historic fabric, combining conservation with a full museological overhaul. The Wien Museum's own site records that the house has already been closed since 2 March 2026 for the project; the newsletter dates the start of building work to early 2027, with installation of the new display planned for the fourth quarter of 2027.
At the centre of the plan is a new permanent exhibition of roughly 210 square metres, devoted to Schubert's life and work and to Vienna between 1800 and 1830. Following his biography, it will take in family and domestic life, education, musical culture, leisure, political conditions, and illness and health care, setting the composer against the social realities of the city that shaped him.
Until the reopening the birthplace remains closed to visitors, and the Wien Museum has not yet published further detail on the curatorial format or exhibition design.
