A special lecture is scheduled for 24 October. Titled ‘Gutai in the Yamamura Collection’, the lecture will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. in the lecture room, which has capacity for 80 people; admission is first come, first served.
The lecture will be led by curator Suzuki, who was responsible for the museum’s 2019 Yamamura Collection exhibition and is knowledgeable about Gutai works.
The exhibition brings together Rodin sculptures and other modern works from the Matsukata Collection with postwar avant-garde art, centered on the Gutai Art Association, from the Yamamura Collection. Yamamura’s collecting initially focused on modern art in Japan and abroad before shifting, after his mother’s death, toward postwar Japanese avant-garde art.
The exhibition forms part of the National Museums of Art ‘Collection Dialogue’ initiative and marks the 160th anniversary of Matsukata’s birth and the 100th anniversary of Yamamura’s birth. The 164-work collection was placed in the holdings of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art the following year and was later expanded by three works.
