Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is marking the approaching close of 'America 250: Common Threads', an exhibition in the South Exhibition Gallery that runs through July 27, 2026. The museum has described the show as a look at stories that connect America’s past, present and future through historic documents, textiles and contemporary art, with admission listed at $15 and free entry for members, SNAP participants, veterans and visitors age 25 and under.

The exhibition is framed around the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. According to the museum, an early engraving of the Declaration anchors a group of historic documents displayed alongside textiles, paintings, toys and other works spanning from 1776 to the present. The exhibition is organized to consider how artists and national leaders have documented American history, while also showing how artists have fostered civic participation and strengthened community relationships.

Crystal Bridges says the installation includes material that traces both national symbolism and personal memory. Among the examples cited are hundreds of 20th-century patriotic snapshots and souvenirs collected from America’s Centennial in 1876, along with imagery of George Washington, eagles, flags and quilts. The exhibition page also notes works by contemporary artists including Robert Colescott, Kay WalkingStick and Howard Finster, each of whom revisits American symbols in different ways.

Quilting is a central part of the presentation. The museum says live quilting takes place in the galleries as local quilters and quilting guilds piece together quilt squares made by K-12 students across Arkansas and designed by artist Basil Kincaid. The exhibition page also identifies Kincaid’s 'Melanin Activation' as one of the works on view, underscoring the project’s use of fiber art as both material practice and civic image-making.

A related public program is scheduled for July 25, when Crystal Bridges will host 'Artist Q & A with Basil Kincaid' from 2 to 2:45 p.m. in the South Exhibition Gallery. The museum says Kincaid will discuss 'Melanin Activation', including its ideas, materials and techniques, then continue in a panel discussion with curators Ella Nowicki and Seynabou Diallo, followed by audience Q&A. The event is free with an exhibition ticket.

The exhibition is presented in partnership with the American Folk Art Museum and is part of 'Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026', presented by Craft in America. The exhibition page lists examples ranging from a 1776 edition of Thomas Paine’s 'Common Sense' to works by Marie Watt, Vanessa German and other artists, placing historical objects and contemporary practice in the same gallery conversation before the show closes on July 27 at Crystal Bridges in Bentonville.
