The Whitney Museum of American Art will mark West Side Fest with free admission on July 10 and July 12, pairing the neighborhood festival with a set of community-oriented programs drawn from its current summer schedule. The museum said the three-day festival celebrates Manhattan’s West Side cultural community and is presented by the West Side Cultural Network.

According to the Whitney’s announcement, visitors can enter the museum free on Friday, July 10, as part of Free Friday Night, and again on Sunday, July 12, for Free Second Sunday. The museum also listed special indoor and outdoor programming, hands-on artmaking, performances, gallery tours, and other activities for visitors of all ages during the festival period.

West Side Fest’s Whitney programming is set alongside the museum’s current flagship exhibition, 'Whitney Biennial 2026', which is on view from March 8 to August 23, 2026. The Whitney describes the Biennial as the eighty-second edition of its long-running survey of American art, featuring 56 artists, duos, and collectives. The exhibition spans the museum’s floors 1, 5, 6, and 8 and includes a billboard across from the museum’s entrance on Gansevoort Street.

The Biennial is co-organized by Whitney curators Marcela Guerrero, the DeMartini Family Curator, and Drew Sawyer, the Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography, with Beatriz Cifuentes, Biennial Curatorial Assistant, and Carina Martinez, Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow. The museum’s own text frames the exhibition as an inquiry into what it means to name something “American,” emphasizing intergenerational and international participation and a range of media and artistic strategies.

Several West Side Fest events connect directly to artists in the Biennial. On July 10, the Whitney will host 'Open Studio for Teens: Ignacio Gatica' from 4 to 6 pm. The program invites teens to join Gatica in a session centered on photography and creative image-making, with the museum saying participants will explore visual storytelling and create their own photographic cityscapes and visual narratives. The event is described as one of several West Side Fest programs for teens.

On July 12, the museum will offer 'All Ages Artmaking with Taína H. Cruz' from 11 am to 3 pm. The Whitney says graffiti informs Cruz’s paintings and drawings, including work created on-site for the 82nd edition of the Biennial, and notes that her billboard work, 'I Saw the Future and It Smiled Back', reflects a sense of newness and anticipation. Also on July 12, the Whitney will present 'Make and Paste a Poster with Rich Tu' from 2 to 5 pm in collaboration with Poster House as part of West Side Fest. The museum describes Tu as the designer behind the 2026 FIFA World Cup poster for New York and New Jersey.

The Whitney’s broader summer public-programming calendar also includes Free Friday Nights and Free Second Sundays, both of which run alongside the Biennial. The museum says Free Friday Nights offer admission from 5 to 10 pm, while Free Second Sundays provide free all-day admission on the second Sunday of each month, with tickets required for both programs due to limited capacity.
