Heide Museum of Modern Art will present 'Crichton, Tucker, Whiteley: The Chelsea Hotel Years 1967–69' from 28 February to 16 August 2026 in the Albert & Barbara Tucker Gallery in Bulleen. The exhibition focuses on the work of Richard Crichton, Albert Tucker and Brett Whiteley during the years they lived at New York’s Chelsea Hotel, and examines how each artist responded to the American environment while developing a distinct visual language.

According to Heide’s exhibition materials, the project looks at the trio as Australian artists navigating the city’s competitive avant-garde scene. The period at the Chelsea Hotel was described as both challenging and galvanising, and the show is framed around the work that emerged from those years as well as the experiences that shaped it. The exhibition’s title places the hotel years themselves at the center of the narrative, signalling a historically specific moment when the artists were working in close proximity to one another in New York.

The museum’s description sets out the different ways the artists absorbed their surroundings. Crichton and Whiteley drew heavily on music, with Crichton responding to the street-level theatre of brass bands and carnival jazz, and Whiteley to the presence of Bob Dylan as he channelled the American psyche into raw, expressive imagery. Tucker, by contrast, is presented as maintaining a more deliberately antipodean visual language, while still being influenced at times by the local jazz scene.

The exhibition is curated by Sheridan Palmer as a guest curator and is included with museum admission. Heide has paired the presentation with a strong run of 2026 exhibitions across its galleries, but 'Crichton, Tucker, Whiteley: The Chelsea Hotel Years 1967–69' sits within the museum’s program as a focused historical study rather than a broad survey. Its subject matter links three important figures in Australian modernism through a specific geographic and cultural crossroads.

Richard Crichton, Albert Tucker and Brett Whiteley are each identified by Heide as artists who were working in a period when Australian practice was being tested and reframed in dialogue with international modernism. The exhibition’s interest lies in the way the Chelsea Hotel acted as a setting for that exchange, offering a compact lens through which to consider personal style, artistic influence and the pressures of making work in New York in the late 1960s.

The exhibition opens on 28 February 2026 and runs through 16 August 2026 at the Albert & Barbara Tucker Gallery, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Bulleen.
