Tate Britain’s exhibition ‘James McNeill Whistler’ was the first major retrospective of the artist in three decades. The exhibition closed on September 27 and brought together world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works.
He was boldly experimental and famously witty, disrupting the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty and creating “art for art’s sake.” He also drew a parallel between painting and music, giving many of his paintings titles such as “arrangements,” “harmonies” and “nocturnes” to emphasize tonal harmony.
Visitors can also see the artist’s ‘Portrait of Lady Meux’ in Gallery 4.
