‘IN DEPTH: Juan Miguel Pozo’ will open at El Apartamento’s Miami location on Saturday, October 3, and is scheduled to run during October and November 2026. The presentation marks Pozo’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
The exhibition forms part of a series of presentations intended to offer deeper insight into artists’ working processes and the historiographic contexts that inform their practices. Pozo was born in Holguín, Cuba, in 1967, studied at the School of Painting and Drawing of Isla de Pinos and the San Alejandro Academy in Havana, and completed his artistic training at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under K. Klapheck.
Pozo’s paintings begin with a conception of the urban body as a complex cultural organism capable of resisting the weight of time, ideologies, oblivion and political control. Each painting is described as more than an image: it is an archive formed through elements connected directly to collective memory and collective imaginaries. That account also presents the paintings as a warning about how societies remember their own history and as a reflection on how, and what, they choose to forget.
Scar and silence are identified as two concepts of particular importance in Pozo’s artistic imagination. His landscapes are often invaded by bands of colour that appear to result from scraping the image’s surface, a process described as extraction or erasure.
