A large-scale retrospective of David Novros will open at the Galerie der Gegenwart on 7 October 2026, presenting more than 50 paintings, copper reliefs and works on paper across two floors in an exhibition spanning more than six decades. The opening is scheduled for 7 October 2026 at 7pm on the second and third floors of the Galerie der Gegenwart.
The presentation will mark Novros’s 85th birthday, with more than 50 of his paintings, copper reliefs and works on paper—including some monumental works—on view across two floors. Novros was born in Los Angeles in 1941. His work explores the impact of colour, form and surface in space, and ranges from site-specific murals to multi-panel paintings hung on museum walls.
The exhibition frames Novros’s wall-covering works as interacting with the surrounding architecture and making tangible the interrelationships between artwork, space and viewer. During a trip to Europe in 1963, Novros saw large-scale wall paintings in interiors including the Alhambra in Granada, Giotto’s frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the mosaics in Ravenna.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle received the multi-part work ‘Four Seasons’ (1974) as a gift from the Lafrenz Collection in 2021.
