Doyle’s Linley House sale is scheduled for October 7, with lots numbered 1 through 234. Archibald McNeal Willard’s ‘Pluck’ and ‘Pluck II’ are in the auction, illustrating how 19th-century paintings moved into popular culture.
James F. Ryder commissioned a sequel to the original painting. The paintings were reproduced as 10,000 pairs of chromolithographs.
The reproductions brought the comic scenes to audiences across America. An expanding market for illustrated prints allowed a compelling image to travel far beyond the original painting itself.
