‘How do you throw a brick through the window…’ is on view March 14–October 4, 2026, at the Arts Center. The exhibition is co-organized by Tufts University Art Galleries (TUAG) with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.
The exhibition is inspired by artist and activist Johanna Hedva, who poses the question, ‘how do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can’t get out of bed?’
Through new commissions and recent works, artists Yani aviles, Chloe P. Crawford, Nat Decker, Jeff Kasper, Carly Mandel, Jeffrey Meris, and Libby Paloma look toward Hedva’s work to prioritize modes of dissent that influence personal, political, and social systems.
Each artist uses strategies of movement, communication, interruptions in time and space, or moments of play to achieve such transformation.
As Hedva suggests in her question, the most meaningful strategies in challenging cultural systems and governing bodies are actions that take place beyond the streets. By circulating these artists’ processes of resistance, enacting a revolution becomes more approachable and possible on both individual and communal scales.
