‘Beyond the Margins’ will be on view from October 9, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The exhibition’s opening is scheduled for 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Bronx Museum and is free and open to all ages.

Fourteen New York City high school students who participated in The Bronx Museum’s Teen Summer 2026 session collaborated with Museum educators to curate the exhibition. They selected works from the Museum’s permanent collection that demonstrate how art can defy material and social conventions.

The students selected eleven artists working across printmaking, photography, painting, and assemblage. The exhibition asks how artists defy convention, experiment with materials, and use their work as a form of resistance.

‘Beyond the Margins’ frames defiance not as a singular act of rebellion, but as a sustained practice of surpassing limitations. Viewers are invited to consider what it means to push boundaries and how people demonstrate defiance in everyday life. The exhibition page identifies Jamel Shabazz’s ‘Rush Hour, Brooklyn, New York’ from 1980 as a chromogenic print in the presentation.

The Bronx Museum presents the exhibition as part of its Teen Summer program, which it describes as a way for young people to collaborate with museums while reflecting on and challenging the world around them.
