Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg will present 'F.C. Gundlach. You’ll Never Watch Alone' from 8 May to 16 August 2026, joining the 9th Triennale der Photographie Hamburg 2026. The exhibition is described by the institution as a major survey of the work of F.C. Gundlach (1926–2021), bringing together more than 200 works that range from magazine covers and unpublished photographs to works by artists associated with his wider network.
According to the exhibition page, the show is the first large presentation of Gundlach’s work after his death in 2021 and marks his 100th birthday with loans from the Stiftung F.C. Gundlach. Bucerius Kunst Forum says the exhibition will explore his many roles as photographer, gallery owner, collector, entrepreneur and networker, and will draw on both his own images and works by contemporaries, predecessors and successors.
Gundlach became known as a fashion photographer from the 1950s onward, and the institution says his pictures helped shape ideas of fashion, trends, identity and gender in German and international magazines. The exhibition text also emphasises his activity as a connector between Paris, New York and Tokyo, and his support for younger photographers and emerging talent. That broader circle appears in the show through works by figures including Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld, Regina Relang and Cindy Sherman, alongside Gundlach’s own photographs.
The presentation is intended to place his output within the visual and social conditions of its time. Bucerius Kunst Forum says it will highlight the interplay between photography, cultural debate and power relations, while also tracing continuities and breaks in Gundlach’s personal and photographic development. The exhibition material points to legendary magazine covers, yet also promises never-before-seen black-and-white and colour photographs, experimental material and new discoveries from Gundlach and his peers.
The exhibition is shown in Hamburg as a joint project of Bucerius Kunst Forum and Stiftung F.C. Gundlach. It forms part of the 9th Triennale der Photographie Hamburg, which runs under the title 'Alliance, Infinity, Love – in the Face of the Other' and presents eleven exhibitions in eight venues across the city from 5 June to 22 September 2026. Bucerius Kunst Forum’s own exhibition dates, however, are listed as 8 May to 16 August 2026 at Alter Wall 12.
The institution’s website also notes related programming around the exhibition, including guided tours and a satellite exhibition titled 'We’ll Always Watch Together' at Alter Wall 4, which is shown in cooperation with the Folkwang University of the Arts and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund. The satellite project is open free of charge on Fridays to Sundays from 12 noon to 6 pm until 16 August 2026.
